David C. Driskell Community Park Jim Henson Celebration Day, Hyattsville, MD

On a glorious spring afternoon, the Hyattsville community came together to celebrate Jim Henson’s spirit and creativity. The inspiration for the day was the unveiling of new signage with information and images relating Jim’s family history and local connections for the park’s Jim Henson Courtyard. The sign was a collaboration of The Jim Henson Legacy, the City of Hyattsville, and the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation, funded by a grant from the Jane Henson Foundation.

Organized by Cheri Everhart, Hyattsville Deputy Director of Community Services/Civic Engagement, and her team, the day included a ceremony led by Mayor Robert S. Croslin, with remarks by Heather Henson, Craig Shemin, and Hyattsville historian Stuart Eisenberg, craft activities with puppet company Alex and Olmsted, a display of the Jim Henson: Life and Legacy poster exhibit, and performances by musicians and dancers from The Jim Henson Academy for Visual and Performing Arts/Northwestern High School (Jim’s alma mater) and a local youth choir. An ice cream truck added to the joyful spirit of the day.
